Building Hope: East Africa’s First Lymphedema Rehabilitation Center – Uganda
Lymphedema Rehabilitation Center – Uganda
Lymphedema in Africa is a deeply neglected condition, silently affecting thousands especially cancer survivors, women, and rural patients. In Uganda, there has never been a dedicated center for lymphedema treatment. But that’s about to change.
The Lymphedema Warriors Association Uganda (LWAU) is leading a groundbreaking project: converting a former school in Isingiro District into East Africa’s first Lymphedema Rehabilitation and Therapy Center. The land was generously donated by a parent whose daughter suffers from chronic lymphedema.
Why This Center Matters
People with lymphedema in Uganda, including many who develop the condition after cancer treatment (such as breast, cervical, or pelvic cancers), face tremendous physical, emotional, and economic pain often in silence. With no regional access to proper care, patients are left without compression garments, physiotherapy, or surgery.
This center will change that.
With a fundraising goal of $90,000 USD, the center will offer:
Six treatment rooms for advanced lymphatic care
Physiotherapy & rehabilitation spaces for mobility recovery
On-site accommodation for rural and remote patients
Kitchen, dining, and administrative areas
Training facilities for therapists and surgeons from across Africa
