Lymphedema is a chronic condition where excess lymphatic fluid collects in body tissues, leading to swelling — most commonly in the arms or legs. It develops when the lymphatic system, which normally drains this fluid, becomes damaged or blocked.
In Uganda, lymphedema is often linked to infections, surgeries, or untreated wounds. It can cause discomfort, affect movement, and impact quality of life. Early diagnosis and proper management are essential to prevent complications.
Many patients delay treatment because they are unaware that swelling could be a sign of lymphedema. Early education helps reduce stigma and encourages timely care. The Lymphedema Warriors Association Uganda (LWAU) works to bring this awareness to communities through clinics and outreach programs.
