Compression Therapy in Uganda

Managing lymphedema safely through proper compression, bandaging, and garment use.

What is Compression Therapy?

Compression therapy is the main treatment for lymphedema. It uses elastic bandages, wraps, or specially made garments to gently squeeze the limb and help lymph fluid move out of swollen tissues.

Purpose of Compression

  • Reduce and control limb swelling
  • Improve lymph drainage and circulation
  • Prevent fluid buildup after exercise or long standing
  • Protect skin and reduce the risk of infection

Types of Compression

  • Multi-layer bandaging: Several layers of padding and elastic bandages applied by a trained nurse or therapist during the intensive phase of treatment.
  • Compression garments: Custom or ready-made sleeves, stockings, or wraps worn daily to maintain limb size once swelling is reduced.
  • Velcro or adjustable wraps: Useful in community settings for easier self-application and washing.

Bandaging Practice in Uganda

At LWAU and partner clinics, nurses teach patients and families how to apply reusable bandages correctly. Locally sourced cotton or elastic materials are encouraged to lower costs while maintaining therapeutic pressure.

Important Tips

  • Always wash and dry the skin before applying bandages.
  • Start wrapping at the toes or fingers and move upwards.
  • Pressure should be firm but not painful—avoid cutting off blood flow.
  • Check the limb daily for redness, pain, or numbness.
  • Remove and reapply if the bandage feels too tight or slips.

Training and Follow-Up

LWAU provides practical demonstrations during community clinics. Patients are reviewed regularly to ensure correct bandaging, prevent complications, and assess the need for new garments.
