Self-Care & Exercise for Lymphedema in Uganda

Practical ways to protect your skin, reduce swelling, and stay healthy every day.

Daily Skin Care

Good skin hygiene prevents infection and keeps swelling under control. In Uganda’s warm climate, it’s important to wash gently and keep the limb dry.

  • Wash the affected limb daily with mild soap and clean water.
  • Dry carefully, especially between toes or fingers.
  • Apply unscented moisturizer to keep skin soft and prevent cracks.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or strong perfumes on the limb.

Protecting Your Limb

  • Always wear shoes or slippers outdoors to prevent injury.
  • Avoid tight clothing, elastic bands, or jewelry that may block lymph flow.
  • Protect the limb from cuts, burns, or insect bites.
  • Use gloves for gardening or cleaning.

Exercise and Movement

Gentle movement helps lymph fluid circulate and reduces swelling. Regular activity also improves flexibility and mood.

  • Do slow ankle and toe movements while sitting or lying down.
  • Raise the swollen limb on a pillow when resting.
  • Take short walks daily; avoid standing still for long periods.
  • Perform breathing exercises—deep inhalation and exhalation help lymph flow.

Healthy Living Tips

  • Drink plenty of clean water to stay hydrated.
  • Eat balanced meals with fruits and vegetables.
  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce limb strain.
  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol use.
